Candidates must have a master’s or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field. They must also complete supervised clinical experience hours and meet any additional state-specific requirements.

2) Exam content:

The MFT exam covers the following content areas: the practice of systemic therapy, systemic theory and techniques, ethical, legal, and professional issues, human development, diversity and social context, and research and evaluation.

3) Exam format:

The MFT exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and has a four-hour time limit. It is administered via computer-based testing.

4) State licensure:

Candidates who pass the MFT exam may be eligible for licensure as a marriage and family therapist in their state. Licensure requirements may vary by state, so candidates should check with their state licensing board for specific requirements.
