The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) exam is designed for individuals seeking licensure as marriage and family therapists in the United States. The exam is developed and administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB).
Candidates must have a master’s or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field. They must also complete supervised clinical experience hours and meet any additional state-specific requirements.
The MFT exam covers the following content areas: the practice of systemic therapy, systemic theory and techniques, ethical, legal, and professional issues, human development, diversity and social context, and research and evaluation.
The MFT exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and has a four-hour time limit. It is administered via computer-based testing.
Candidates who pass the MFT exam may be eligible for licensure as a marriage and family therapist in their state. Licensure requirements may vary by state, so candidates should check with their state licensing board for specific requirements.
